The artist, poet, scientist, and philosopher in all of us has a memorable story or particular experience with trees. Trees stand as
shrines of the living, whether dwarf or giant column, from eery ghostlike aliens, to empty bark shells of an old gourd, trees are indeed remarkable beings to explore, respect and witness graciously. However, as much as they stand structurally separate from us they are indeed as sentient as us and together we have a significant interdependent connection on many levels that can't be taken for granted. For centuries trees have not only been an intrinsic resource to provide us shelter, but they continue to draw us into their power and strength for the purposes of creative expression.
RISE is a group show that pays homage to the 'tree' in the creative process. Twenty-eight artists address the relationship with trees in 2D and 3D formats, sometimes employing wood materials, reclaimed or formally crafted, sometimes in ceramic, textiles and functional design. All push the conversation between human-made and nature into one of collaborative revelation.
