Reflecting on Reflections
March 22- April 27:
Reception: March 23, 5-7pm
Artist talk: March 23
One Small Pebble
Ripples in water, ripples in time
both can be created by the smallest things and then the ripples propagate to influence the entirety. A friend said to me after the 2016 election that one person could not make that big a difference.
Really? The ripples of that moment in time will last decades! The effect of one small pebble will embrace the
whole pond and the light reflected
from its surface will reflect the disturbance.
Festivity
Festivity uses the same technique as
the above “Looking Glass” image. I focused on the reflections of the branches in the quarry and then turned myself in the opposite direction
and focused on the dark reflections
of the trees. I changed the white balance between the shots and
then flipped the whole image in post processing to get the feeling I wanted.
I love the joy in this reflection.
Winooski River #2
After lunch I decided to cross the bridge on the opposite side and was
gifted another amazing reflection of a building upstream. The contrast of
the red supports against the green windows was again a delight to witness and photograph.
Red Ship Prow
I love boats, the ocean, and the beach. I look for parts of boats that have strong lines and/or colors. This had both. It was a large fishing boat on Martha’s Vineyard in the village of Menemsha. It may have been recently painted, as it was a pristine, fire engine red. I was especially attracted to the prow and the bright reflection it created in the water. The constantly changing shape of the reflection in the swirly water mesmerized me. I took many shots and selected this as my favorite. I also applied a similar Photoshop filter to this photo, where you can see similar twisting lines as in Ludlow Ice Patterns.
The Bean
There is an unexpected treasure
trove of reflections in the skin
of artist Anish Kapoor’s monumental public sculpture known as “Cloud Gate” (or more popularly, “The Bean”) in Chicago’s Millennium Park. No matter where you stand, whether in front or back, alongside or underneath, you will see diverse and
insanely distorted images of what is happening all around.
Buildings bend, people become pudgy or stringy. Peter Max in the Windy City, a funhouse mirror trained on the world.
Making Ripples
This photo was taken on a foggy April dawn on Sodom Pond in Adamant. I was walking around the pond when I noticed the Canada goose creating some lovely ripples in the water and
heading toward a clump of grass. The whole scene appeared out of the fog which hid what was distracting in the background andgave everything such soft color.
